How old is red riding hood story

She picked a few, watched the butterflies flit about for awhile, listened to the frogs croaking and then picked a few more. Little Red Riding Hood was enjoying the warm summer day so much, that she didn't notice a dark shadow approaching out of the forest behind her Then she realized how late she was and quickly excused herself, rushing down the path to her Grandma's house.

The wolf, a little out of breath from running, arrived at Grandma's and knocked lightly at the door. Come in, come in! I was worried sick that something had happened to you in the forest," said Grandma thinking that the knock was her granddaughter. The wolf let himself in. Poor Granny did not have time to say another word, before the wolf gobbled her up! The wolf let out a satisfied burp, and then poked through Granny's wardrobe to find a nightgown that he liked.

He added a frilly sleeping cap, and for good measure, dabbed some of Granny's perfume behind his pointy ears. A few minutes later, Red Riding Hood knocked on the door. The wolf jumped into bed and pulled the covers over his nose. Do come in, my dear," croaked the wolf. When Little Red Riding Hood entered the little cottage, she could scarcely recognize her Grandmother.

But there was also a dangerous threat in the woods, a threat that Little Red Riding Hood was about to encounter. Before she left, her dotting Mother made her promise not to talk to strangers or stray from the trail. But as she skipped deeper and deeper into the woods, she did not realize that hungry eyes were watching her every move. Out behind the trees came a Wolf that was easily three times the size of Little Red.

And just where are we off to in such a hurry my delicious little friend? Do you see that tree right over there? You should go pick some for Grandmother. As Grandmother opened the door, she suddenly heard a rumbling growl and saw nothing but darkness.

As Little Red Riding Hood walked towards the bed, she noticed that something was very strange about Grandmother. And then the Wolf disguised as Grandmother jumped from the bed and devoured the screaming girl whole. The sun was setting, and a Woodsman was coming back from a long day of chopping wood when suddenly he heard a loud scream in the distance. Entering the cottage, the Woodsman was surprised to find a snoring wolf sleeping in the bed.

Angry that the Wolf had eaten the sweet old lady he would talk to from time to time, the Woodsman readied his ax. With the Wolf still fast asleep, Little Red Riding Hood went outside and collected some sharp-pointed stones. But in the Grimm Brothers took this a step further. The story largely follows the same plot; Little Red Cap takes some cake to her grandmother and comes across a wolf in the forest.

Here she is not challenged to a race, and instead picks some flowers for a bouquet. This is the first variation of the modern story that ends with a rescue, which is very different for a Grimm retelling.

In one version a passing huntsman filled his belly with stones instead which killed him when he tried to run away.

They tempted him to look over and when he fell he slid into a trough of water and drowned. While ending happily for Little Red Cap and her grandmother, these especially hark back to the Greek story of the wolf being stoned or disappearing into the water. Whether this fairy tale was inspired by the ancient Greek tale, we will never know for sure but it is clear that the idea of a werewolf has seeped into popular literature for thousands of years.
