How do publishing deals work

While some draws are enough to allow the writer to write full time, most are enough, at least, to make it so the writer only has to have a part-time job, leaving more time for songwriting. Demo Budget - Making high quality recordings of your songs is not cheap and having a publisher to put up the money for these recordings can help quite a bit.
Song Pluggers - These are employees of the publishing company who are specifically charged with finding opportunities for your songs. They pitch your songs, relying on their relationships with record labels, producers and artists as well as a variety of other music business decision-makers. It can open doors to meetings, co-writes and countless other relationships in the industry. Submissions will often be with several publishing houses at once, and the agent will be awaiting emails or calls from editors to express interest or reject the book.
When the manuscript is submitted to an editor, the editor will read it as quickly as possible, although bear in mind this can take a little while as editors receive a great deal of manuscripts per week. If the editor likes the book, it will usually be passed around the other editors in the team for second and third opinions, and it might be shown to the sales team to get their take as to whether it is commercial or is likely to do well with their retailers.
If everyone or the majority are in agreement, the book will be taken to an acquisitions meeting. If our managing director and several other people in the business agree with me that the book would be a good addition to our list, I will go back to the agent and make a formal offer.
The agent will then either accept, decline, or negotiate and hopefully, we will reach a deal. Another quick thing to add about the publishing process is that it can be s-l-o-w. It can take time for a book to reach an acquisitions meeting, and I know how difficult it can be when you are sitting refreshing your emails wondering what on earth can be taking so long — but there are lots of factors that do slow things down and silence is not always bad news.
Sometimes, a key person from the acquisitions meeting could be on holiday and the meeting might be postponed, or an editor might be waiting for someone else to finish reading the novel before taking things forward. Try to remain calm while you wait, and remember, you only need one publisher to give you a yes.

Statements are about 4 months old when you get them. Publishing is a consignment business. Harrow just to pick a random book with a great agent! Publishers do look at that, and earning out, or getting respectably close to it, does factor into their decision-making, but it also matters if your book is good, has sales potential not the same thing!
And your fanbase, such as it is, is your strongest market. I know, right? It sucks. But publishing is not a meritocracy. Besides, what you think is great, someone else thinks is crap. If you want to? Because people, writers, readers, interior designers , love books.
Books are the best. It is not commercially cost-effective to say, for example, embossed and foiled lettering on the cover of a first novel, or hardback or even trade paperback formats are the wisest way to market an unknown author.
The Publisher will consult with the author over production details including cover design, blurb and maybe catalogue copy , but you generally have the final say. There should be a clear timeframe for the checking of proofs, and exactly what is expected of the author at this stage to avoid delays.
There are of course, many ways to smooth any ruffled feathers! Accounts to authors are usually twice a year payments for any royalties earned, and even if nothing has been earned a statement is usually sent.
Reversion of rights back to an author usually occurs due to a break in contract or if the book is out of print for historically over 9 months. The print-on-demand availability has now made it possible for authors or trustees of their estates, for example, to reclaim rights on out of print books.
It is wise to state that the publisher requires written consent from the author to reassign the rights to their work elsewhere. Mara Livingstone-McPhail was a bookseller, reviewed books on BBC radio and organized book events in inner-city schools before being lured to London by the team who now run Chicken House Books. A freelance editor, proofreader and writer, she reads every day for as long as she can keep her eyes open.
